The Oban distillery was built in 1794 by brothers Hugh and John Stevenson, before the town of the same name grew up around it, and is one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland. Owned by Diageo, it operates with just one wash and one spirit still, and produces a "West Highland" malt that sits between the dry, smoky style of the islands and the lighter, sweeter malts of the Highlands. The distillery's water flows from a loch three miles away; its barley travels from Speyside; and every drop is still made by a team of seven employees. The mild, temperate climate at the gateway to the Hebrides and the proximity to the sea give Oban its signature salted character. Oban 14 is part of Diageo's Classic Malts Selection.
