Nikka Yoichi 20 Year is a mature Japanese single malt from Nikka’s first distillery in Hokkaido. Official Yoichi house material describes the range as bold and strong with refined peat smoke, smokiness from direct coal-fired distillation and a briny hint from the sea breeze, while backup trade sources support this older 20-year bottling at 52% ABV in 700mL format.
From the Producer
Yoichi was Nikka Whisky Distilling's first distillery, founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru on Hokkaido's west coast after he trained in Scotland and sought a similarly cool, coastal climate for maturation. The distillery is known for retaining direct coal-fired pot stills, a labour-intensive traditional method that most other producers abandoned decades ago and that contributes to Yoichi's weightier, smokier new-make spirit. Nikka has been part of Asahi Group Holdings since 1954.
