Yoichi 15 Year is a mature single malt from Nikka's Yoichi distillery in Hokkaido, built for buyers who want older Japanese whisky with more breadth than younger house releases. Accessible source wording highlights a mature and ample nose with a smooth, silky palate, which fits Yoichi's reputation for weight and restraint rather than overt sweetness.
From the Producer
Yoichi distillery was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, who trained in Scotland before returning to Japan to build a distillery in a location he judged close in climate and character to Scotch whisky country. It is one of two malt whisky distilleries run by Nikka Whisky Distilling, the other being Miyagikyo near Sendai. Yoichi has kept traditional direct coal-fired pot still heating long after most producers moved away from it, a hands-on method that shapes the distillery's weightier new-make character. Nikka has been owned by Asahi Group Holdings since 1954.
