Nikka Whisky was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, who studied organic chemistry and whisky-making in Scotland and is regarded as the father of Japanese whisky. This bottling presents Nikka whisky in a Koimari-pattern ceramic decanter, styled after Arita ware, the porcelain tradition centred on Arita in Saga Prefecture that dates to the early 17th century and produced Japan's first porcelain. Koimari (古伊万里) designates the earlier, richly decorated export style of Arita ware prized by collectors. Such decanters were a common Japanese whisky gifting format from the 1970s-90s and are sought today primarily for their ceramic craftsmanship and collectibility.
