Michter's 20 Year Bourbon 2021 Release 750mL

The 2021 release of Michter's 20 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon, bottled at 57.1% ABV (114.2 proof). It was the first release of the 20 Year since 2019, as Michter's only bottles it in years when suitable barrels exist.

About This Bourbon

Michter's shipped this edition from November 2021 after a two-year gap. It is drawn from a small number of very old barrels of fire-charred new American white oak. After two decades in Kentucky warehouses, evaporation leaves relatively little whiskey in each cask. Expect stone fruit and cherry against deep oak, with a chewy, spicy texture that shows its strength.

Tasting Profile

• Nose: Dried apricot, black cherry and caramel, with old leather and vanilla custard.
• Palate: Dense and chewy: molasses, cinnamon candy, clove and roasted pecan over deep oak.
• Finish: Long, with dark sugar, cedar and gentle tannin.

Serving & Food

Give it time in a covered Glencairn at room temperature before the first sip, and add water a drop at a time. Keep food simple: a few toasted pecans, dates or a thin slice of aged Gouda.

About the Distillery

The modern Michter's was built by two men. Joseph J. Magliocco, a Yale and Harvard Law graduate who had known the old Pennsylvania whiskey since his student days, and his mentor Richard "Dick" Newman, a former head of Austin Nichols (then the distiller of Wild Turkey), took up the abandoned trademark in the 1990s.

Their first big decision was to rebuild the brand in Kentucky rather than Pennsylvania, to be close to experienced whiskey people and good stocks. Michter's still sits within Magliocco's Chatham Imports portfolio.
