Michter's 10 Year is a single-barrel Kentucky straight bourbon from the Limited Production range, bottled at 47.2% ABV. Each bottle comes from one barrel aged at least ten years in new charred American oak.
About This Bourbon
Barrels for the 10 Year are chosen only when the tasting panel thinks they are ready, so release timing varies. The whiskey is proofed to 94.4 proof rather than bottled at cask strength, and each label carries its barrel number. Earlier releases were distilled under contract, and Michter's does not say which barrels come from its own stills. Food & Wine magazine has named it Best American Whiskey.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Dark toffee, maple syrup and charred oak, with baked apple and a little pipe tobacco.
- Palate: Rich caramel and vanilla, then leather, dried cherry and warm baking spice.
- Finish: Long and fairly dry, with oak, white pepper and a trace of cocoa.
Serving & Food
Serve neat at room temperature in a nosing glass and let it breathe for ten minutes; it opens slowly. Try with a pecan tart, roast duck or a mild cigar after dinner.

About the Distillery
Michter's goes back to 1753, when the Swiss Mennonite farmer John Shenk began making rye whiskey at Schaefferstown in Pennsylvania. In the mid-1800s the distillery was bought by Abraham Bomberger and traded for many years as Bomberger's, later taking the Michter's name.
The Pennsylvania business went bankrupt in 1989 and the site was abandoned. The name was picked up in the 1990s and the brand rebuilt in Kentucky, which is where every Michter's whiskey is now distilled and bottled.
