Brand: Mars
Category: Japan

Mars Komagatake 1988 single cask #555 is a rare Japanese single malt from Mars Shinshu, associated in specialist records with American white oak maturation and a small bottle outturn. It is a serious collector whisky

From the Producer

Mars Shinshu is owned by Hombo Shuzo, a Kagoshima company with a long shochu background, and was built in 1985 in Miyada village in Nagano at around 798 metres, making it the highest whisky distillery in Japan. Production stopped in 1992 as the Japanese whisky market contracted and did not restart until 2011, so anything distilled in the late 1980s comes from a small, closed window of stock that can never be added to. A 1988 single cask is drawn from that pre-shutdown period.

Tasting Profile

  • Nose: Vanilla, old oak, orchard fruit, honey, citrus peel and gentle spice
  • Palate: Mature and balanced, with malt sweetness, polished wood, baked fruit, spice and restrained tannin
  • Finish: Long and refined, with oak, fruit and soft spice lingering

Best For

Best for Japanese whisky collectors, Mars Komagatake verticals and vintage single-cask portfolios
