Château Margaux 2020 is the grand vin of the Margaux First Growth, and the third in a strong run of vintages from 2018 to 2020. It is heavily Cabernet-led, with the perfume and silky texture the estate is known for.
About This Wine
The 2020 blend is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, and only 36% of the crop went into the grand vin. Alcohol is 13.5%. The estate describes 2018, 2019 and 2020 as a rare trio of consistent, high-quality years in Bordeaux, and the 2020 blend closely follows the two before it.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Blackcurrant, violet and rose, with cedar, graphite and a hint of sweet spice.
- Palate: Full yet graceful: layered dark fruit, fine powdery tannin and a cool freshness running through the middle.
- Finish: Fragrant and lasting, cassis and cedar with a mineral edge.
Serving & Food
Best left until the early 2030s at least. If you do open one earlier, a three-hour decant helps, then serve at 17°C in a generous tulip-shaped glass. Roast fillet of beef, herb-crusted lamb or a truffled mushroom risotto bring out its finesse.

About the Château
Château Margaux was ranked a First Growth in 1855 and lies in the commune of Margaux-Cantenac, on the Médoc side of the Gironde. André Mentzelopoulos bought the estate in 1977 and invested heavily in the vineyard and cellar; after his death in 1980 his daughter Corinne ran it for 43 years, and her son Alexis Leven-Mentzelopoulos became CEO at the end of 2023. Paul Pontallier directed the estate for more than thirty vintages until his death in 2016, when Philippe Bascaules succeeded him. The red vineyard is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, on deep gravel. The estate also makes Pavillon Rouge and a Sauvignon Blanc, Pavillon Blanc.
