Maison Leroy is the negociant house founded in Auxey-Duresses in 1868, and it is a separate business from Domaine Leroy, the estate holdings, though both have been associated with Lalou Bize-Leroy. The house built its reputation on buying and then holding wine in its own cold cellars, sometimes for many years past the usual release date, which is why mature Leroy bottles regularly appear on the market with unusually consistent provenance. Volnay sits on the Cote de Beaune and is the appellation most associated with perfumed, finer-boned Pinot Noir; 2003 was Burgundy's famously hot summer, producing riper and more forward wines than the norm.
