The 2020 release of Macallan M, the whisky at the heart of the distillery's M Collection. It is drawn from a small group of sherry-seasoned oak casks and presented in a numbered Lalique crystal decanter designed by Fabien Baron.
About This Whisky
M is a no-age-statement single malt bottled at 45% ABV. For the 2020 edition the whisky makers chose fewer than ten casks, all sherry-seasoned oak, and the long contact with that wood produced a dark whisky with a deep rosewood tone. The six faces of the decanter nod to the six pillars. Each decanter is hand made by Lalique and individually numbered. M sits within a wider M Collection that also includes M Black and, from 2022, M Copper.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Date and fig first, lifted by ginger and nutmeg, with a warm, brooding sherry-oak spice.
- Palate: Sticky date and baked apple, then orange oil and dark chocolate, with a firm oak structure.
- Finish: Long and rich, with dried fruit, spice and old oak.
Serving & Food
Open it for a proper occasion and pour into small crystal tumblers or copitas at room temperature. Water is best left aside. A plate of Medjool dates, walnuts and a hard aged Gouda is enough on the side, or serve it with a dark chocolate and chestnut dessert.

About the Distillery
Macallan explains its whisky through what it calls its six pillars: the estate on the Spey, its curiously small stills, exceptional oak casks, sherry, natural colour and mastery. The M Collection was designed as a prism on those ideas. From 2022 the range split into separate decanters, each tied to one pillar: M to natural colour, M Black to mastery and M Copper to the stills. This 2020 M comes from before that split, when a single M decanter carried the whole idea.
