Trockenbeerenauslese is the top rung of German wine law: individually picked berries, shrivelled by botrytis, so concentrated that an entire parcel may yield only a few hundred half-bottles - and in most years, none at all. Ehrenfelser is a Riesling crossing bred in the 1920s, planted briefly in the Rheingau and now almost entirely gone from it, which makes a 1976 TBA from the variety a genuinely unusual survivor.
