Dalwhinnie distillery sits at 1,073 feet (327 m) in the Central Highlands of Scotland, making it one of the highest working distilleries in the country. Built in 1897 by the Caledonian Railway Company as the second of its northern distilleries, the site takes its water from Loch Ericht-side streams and matures spirit in the cold, dry air that defines the Dalwhinnie house style. The Special Releases are Diageo's annual limited programme of small-batch, often cask-strength bottlings drawn from the company's reserve stocks; the 2020 Special Releases carried the theme "Rare by Nature" and the 30 Year Old Dalwhinnie was matured in refill hogsheads to preserve the distillery's softer Highland-malt character. Annual Special Releases are released in limited allocations and trade out through specialist channels globally.
