Louis Roederer is one of the great independent Champagne houses, founded in 1776 and still family-owned under the Roederer family. Cristal was first created in 1876 for Tsar Alexander II of Russia and remains the house's prestige cuvée, produced only from estate-owned grand cru vineyards in Reims and Aÿ and aged in stainless steel before bottle ageing on the second lees. The Cristal 1999 vintage is a classically structured, late-1990s Cristal that has been held in original wooden cases for library distribution, with the larger formats — including 3-litre jeroboams — typically reserved for the most committed collectors.
