Chichibu Chibidaru The Original Quarter Cask 2010 is one of the early Chichibu flagship expressions from the distillery's first years of production. "Chibidaru" — Chichibu + "daru" (the Japanese word for a small hogshead-sized cask) — refers to maturation in small-format casks that give the spirit a higher wood-to-spirit ratio than standard barrels, producing an oak-driven, concentrated house style.

Chichibu was founded by Ichiro Akuto in 2008 on a green-field site in the mountains of Saitama Prefecture. The Akuto family's distilling heritage goes back to Hanyu, which Ichiro's grandfather built and ran until its closure in 2000; the surviving Hanyu casks became the spine of the Ichiro's Malt Card Series and a generation of single-cask releases. At Chichibu the operation is small by design: a single wash still and a single spirit still (with a separate experimental set), floor maltings, slow fermentations and very small cask fills. Maturation is the headline — Chichibu is unusual among major Japanese distillers for how heavily its standard range relies on small-format and active cooperage: bourbon barrels, sherry butts, mizunara, French oak and the small hogshead-style "daru" casks that give Chibidaru its name. Most releases are cask-strength, uncoloured and unfiltered.
