Chichibu 2012 Omiya Takashimaya 50th Anniversary Cask #1953 is a rare Japanese single-cask release from Ichiro's Malt, bottled to mark the 50th anniversary of the Omiya branch of Takashimaya, the long-established Japanese department store group. Chichibu Distillery was founded in 2008 by Ichiro Akuto, the grandson of Toa Shuzo founder Isouji Akuto and the man who previously acquired and bottled the legendary Hanyu "Card Series" casks. Located in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture, just outside Tokyo, Chichibu was the first new licensed malt distillery to open in Japan in decades and was deliberately built small — short fermentation, compact stills, slow distillation and a heavy reliance on cask variety — to produce whisky in a more European craft style. Department-store and retail-partner anniversary bottlings are an established part of the Ichiro's Malt release pattern, with each named retailer — in this case the Omiya branch of Takashimaya — allocated an individual cask for an anniversary release. These partner casks are typically presented at natural strength, without colouring or chill-filtration, and clearly named after the partner and the anniversary being marked. The Omiya Takashimaya 50th anniversary puts this 2012-distilled release firmly within Chichibu's early maturation programme and the front rank of named-cask Chichibu collector bottles.
