Caroni 23 Year Golden Devil 1998 is a long-aged rum from the closed Caroni distillery in Trinidad, part of the sought-after single-cask collector market built around the distillery’s dense, industrial house style.
From the Producer
The Caroni Distillery operated in the Caroni plain of Trinidad from 1918 and was a significant supplier of intensely flavoured, heavy, high-ester rum, much of it sold in bulk to blenders. After its closure in 2002 the warehouses were abandoned, and in 2004 the Italian rum specialist Luca Gargano of Velier discovered barrels still filled with rum dating back to the 1980s, aging in the hot tropical climate (Wikipedia, 'Luca Gargano'). Shortly before the 2005 demolition, Gargano purchased most of the remaining stock and bottled it as single-cask, cask-strength releases. Golden Devil sits within that Velier programme of single-cask Caroni rums.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Molasses, tar, dark caramel, oak spice and the weighty aromatic profile for which mature Caroni bottlings are known.
- Palate: Powerful and full-bodied, with heavy rum character, dark sweetness, oak and a distinctly muscular Trinidad style.
- Finish: Long, warming and assertive, with lingering cask influence and savoury depth.
Best For
Rum collectors, Caroni enthusiasts and drinkers who value high-intensity, old-distillery bottlings with strong secondary-market appeal.
