Caroni was the state-owned sugar-and-rum complex in central Trinidad, operating its own column stills alongside sugar production for most of the 20th century and producing a heavy, high-ester molasses rum with a recognisably industrial character. After the Trinidad and Tobago government closed the estate in 2002, the maturing casks were left in place and eventually acquired by Italian independent bottler Velier in partnership with Caribbean source LCU; subsequent parcels have also been allocated to specialist independent bottlers and retailers worldwide. The Auld Alliance is a Singapore-based whisky and spirits bar and bottler founded by Jean-Michel Brodbeck and Lukasz Dynowiak, with a long track record of curating single-cask spirits for the Asian collector market; Precious Liquors is a specialist Singapore-based retailer working in the same high-end independent segment. Bottles released under their joint Caroni releases pair 1998-vintage distillate with the distributor's single-cask provenance and are typically presented at natural strength, natural colour, without chill-filtration. The 1998 vintage has become one of the benchmark Caroni years for collectors because it gives mature, integrated oak influence while preserving the tarry, heavy rum identity the distillery is famous for.
