Château Calon Ségur 2021 is a Third-Growth (Troisième Cru Classé) red from the northernmost Saint-Estèphe commune on Bordeaux's left bank, bottled at 750mL. The 2021 vintage is widely described as a finesse-led, classically framed Saint-Estèphe — lighter than the solar 2018s and 2019s but built on the château's hallmark Cabernet Sauvignon-led structure and long ageing potential.
From the Producer
Calon Ségur is the oldest estate in the Médoc still operating under its original name, with a viticultural history at this site going back to Roman times and a continuous winemaking identity since at least the 12th century. It was promoted to Third Growth in the 1855 Classification. The estate is famous for the heart on its label, a tribute from the 18th-century Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur — who also owned Lafite and Latour — to the fact that "his heart" always returned to Calon. Since 2012 the château has been owned by Suravenir, the Crédit Mutuel Arkéa insurance arm, which has driven a programme of vineyard renewal and a gentler, more precise extraction style. The estate sits on deep gravel over clay and is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with the usual supporting cast of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Saint-Estèphe's gravel ridges and cooler microclimate give Calon Ségur its signature savoury, graphite-edged Cabernet character rather than the riper jam of Margaux or Pauillac.
