Stagg Batch 22A 2023 750mL is a barrel-proof Kentucky straight bourbon from Buffalo Trace's modern Stagg line, named for George T. Stagg, the 19th-century bourbon merchant who once owned part of what is now the distillery site.
From the Producer
George T. Stagg (1832–1901) was a Kentucky bourbon distiller and merchant who built and operated several distilleries during the second half of the 19th century, including a Louisville operation and the OFC (Old Fire Copper) Distillery that once stood on the Frankfort site now occupied by Buffalo Trace. The modern George T. Stagg bourbon was released by Buffalo Trace Distillery from 2002 onward as an uncut, unfiltered, barrel-proof Kentucky straight bourbon, traditionally issued twice a year as a Spring ("A") batch and a Fall ("B") batch. Each batch is blended from a selection of barrels hand-chosen for the Stagg profile and bottled without chill-filtration or reduction. Stagg Batch 22A was released in early 2023 and is widely reported at 132.2 proof (66.1% ABV) with an average barrel age in the 8-to-9-year range; the underlying mash bill sits in the Buffalo Trace low-rye bourbon family.
Tasting Notes
- Nose — Dark caramel, toasted oak, cocoa and driving spice.
- Palate — Powerful and concentrated, with toffee, dark fruit, char and a big barrel-proof core.
- Finish — Very long and warming, with pepper, oak and lingering chocolate.
