Buffalo Trace Single Oak Project 375mL is the distillery's large-scale bourbon experiment designed to show how oak choices shape the final whiskey, bottled at 45% ABV / 90 proof in a 375mL format.

The Single Oak Project was launched by Buffalo Trace Distillery in 2011 as one of the most extensive wood experiments ever undertaken by an American whiskey producer. According to the distillery, the project began with 96 individually selected American white oak trees, which yielded 192 unique tree sections and a corresponding series of single barrels, with each of those barrels bottled individually. Buffalo Trace designed the project around seven critical variables — tree source, tree age, wood stave placement, wood grain, wood toast/char level, barrel char depth and ageing warehouse position — so that consumers could compare single-barrel bottlings side by side and identify which variable produced the largest difference in the glass. The project was originally released in 14 numbered phases and the distillery continues to use the underlying barrels as a research resource, with the program producing ongoing reference data on oak's contribution to bourbon character.
