Shafer Hillside Select 2017 is the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon of Shafer Vineyards and one of Napa Valley’s benchmark collector reds. The wine is built around Stags Leap District fruit, with the structure and concentration expected of a long-cellaring top-tier Napa Cabernet.
From the Producer
The Shafer property has been farmed for wine since 1880, one of the Napa Valley estates that helped fill San Francisco's cellars and win medals at the 1889 Paris Exposition. John Shafer, a Chicago publishing executive, bought the site in 1972 and spent the mid-1970s planting the hillside to Cabernet Sauvignon, making the winery's first Cabernet in 1978. His son Doug Shafer joined as winemaker in 1983, and Elias Fernandez joined the following year as assistant winemaker; together the three built Hillside Select and the house style of elegance, richness and balance that Shafer is known for today. Fernandez was named winemaker in 1994 and Food & Wine's Winemaker of the Year in 2002, and continues to lead winemaking at Shafer today.
