A 1967 Riesling Beerenauslese from the Erbacher Siegelsberg, made by Schloss Reinhartshausen in the Rheingau. The word Cabinet on the label is a pre-1971 term that estates used for their finest reserve wines, which places this bottle firmly in an older era of German wine.
About This Wine
Siegelsberg is an Erbach site lying close to the river, near the Marcobrunn, on deep soils that give full, ripe Riesling. Beerenauslese is made from overripe, hand-selected berries, many shrivelled by noble rot. Before the 1971 wine law, Rheingau estates used Cabinet to mark their best reserve casks, quite different from the lighter Kabinett of today. At close to sixty years old, the wine will have deepened to amber with dried-fruit and tertiary flavours.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Dried apricot, orange marmalade, honey, black tea and a mature petrol note.
- Palate: Sweet and evolved, with dried fruit and caramel carried by lasting Riesling acidity.
- Finish: Long and honeyed, with citrus peel and toffee.
Serving & Food
At nearly sixty years old, this bottle deserves a day upright and, if there is sediment, a slow decant. Around 10 to 12°C is enough chill. Drink it now. Aged Gouda, a caramelised apple tart or a simple plate of walnuts will bring out its tea and toffee notes.

About the Estate
Schloss Reinhartshausen stands on the western edge of Erbach, near Eltville, with the Rhine island of Mariannenaue in front of it. The site grew from medieval knightly farms first recorded in 1337. It took its present name after 1753, and from 1855 it belonged to Princess Marianne of the Netherlands and then the Prussian royal house until 1987. The Lergenmüller family has owned the estate since 2012.
Riesling dominates the vineyards, which lie in classified sites in Erbach, Hattenheim and Kiedrich, including Marcobrunn, Erbacher Schlossberg and Siegelsberg. The island vineyard on the Mariannenaue is a rare feature on the Rhine.
