Rum Nation is the independent bottling arm founded in 1999 by Fabio Rossi, an Italian merchant who began buying single-distillery rum casks when almost nobody outside the Caribbean was doing it. This bottling comes from Hampden Estate in Trelawny, Jamaica, a distillery that has fermented wild, without commercial yeast, since 1753 and works entirely on double-retort copper pot stills. Hampden's marks are the most ester-heavy in Jamaica, and a 1992 distillation predates the estate's own branded releases by more than two decades.

Tasting Profile

• Nose: Overripe tropical fruit, varnish and olive brine — the high-ester Jamaican signature, with oak underneath.
• Palate: Oily and intense, banana and pineapple against glue-pot funk, with long cask time rounding the edges without removing the estate character.
• Finish: Very long and savoury. Water opens the esters further rather than diluting them.

Best For

Jamaican rum collectors, high-ester enthusiasts and after-dinner service. Drink it neat at room temperature, adding water only if you want the esters to open.
