The Cask of Yamazaki Sherry Butt #OM70172 1990 is a rare single-cask Suntory release from Yamazaki. Distilled in 1990 and bottled in 2007 from a sherry butt at 59% ABV, it sits among the most collectible Japanese single malts

From the Producer

A sherry butt is the largest cask Suntory fills, around 500 litres, and a single-cask bottling from one takes everything from that one barrel and nothing from anywhere else — so the cask number on the label is the actual identity of the whisky. This one was distilled at Yamazaki in 1990 and drawn from butt #OM70172 at cask strength, with no water and no blending to smooth it.

Tasting Profile

  • Nose: Black cherry, raisin, dark chocolate, polished oak, incense and sherry spice.
  • Palate: Concentrated and powerful, with dried fruit, cocoa, espresso, orange peel and cask-strength structure.
  • Finish: Long and warming, with lingering sherry, sandalwood and bitter chocolate.

Best For

Best for Yamazaki single-cask collectors, rare Japanese whisky portfolios and buyers seeking old-style sherry-butt Suntory character
