The Yamazaki distillery was opened in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii near Kyoto in Shimamoto, Osaka Prefecture, making it Japan's first commercial whisky distillery. Torii hired Masataka Taketsuru, who had studied whisky-making in Scotland, as the distillery's first factory director. Yamazaki is now owned by Suntory (successor to Torii's Kotobukiya) and its 12 Year single malt is one of the brand's best-known age-stated expressions. This ceramic decanter format follows a tradition of limited presentation packaging that Suntory has used periodically for Yamazaki, distinct from the standard glass bottle.
