Willett Distillery was founded in 1936 by A. Lambert Willett and his sons on family farmland outside Bardstown, Kentucky, and has stayed under the same family's ownership since. Between 1984 and 2012 the company operated as Kentucky Bourbon Distillers before reverting to the Willett name; it is now run by the Kulsveen family, descendants of the Willetts by marriage. The distillery is known for small-batch and single-barrel releases that experiment with proof, age and — as with the XCF line — secondary cask finishing, a departure from its standard bourbon and rye bottlings.
