Old Fitzgerald was Pappy Van Winkle's brand, and in 1950 it was distilled at Stitzel-Weller in Shively, Louisville — the plant he opened on Derby Day 1935 and ran on a wheated mash bill, wheat standing in for rye as the secondary grain, which is why these bourbons drink softer than their age suggests. A bottle distilled in 1950 and filled in 1958 is Stitzel-Weller whiskey made in Pappy's own working lifetime; he died in 1965.
