From the Producer
Tapatio is produced at La Alteña distillery, founded in 1937 by Don Felipe Camarena in the Los Altos highlands near Arandas, Jalisco, and today run by master distiller Carlos Camarena in partnership with Marko Karakasevic of Charbay Distillery. The Excelencia Gran Reserva was distilled in 1996 and matured around four years in char no. 4 new American oak before being rested further in five-litre glass vessels ahead of bottling in 2013, giving it an unusually long total maturation for the category.
Tasting Profile
Nose — Hot caramel apple, intense cooked agave and a hidden floral note.
Palate — Earthy agave, brown sugar, traditional tequila spice and a hint of chocolate wrapped in oak-driven mellowness.
Finish — Extremely long and rich.
