Two magnums in an original wooden case: one Syrah and one Grenache from Sine Qua Non's 2022 Eleven Confessions vineyard wines. Magnums age more slowly than bottles, which suits wines that spend over three years in barrel before release.
About This Wine
Both wines come only from Eleven Confessions in the Sta. Rita Hills. SQN gives these single-vineyard wines an extended barrel age of more than three years before bottling, much longer than the 23 months used for the Distenta series. The Syrah is built around dark fruit, pepper and a savoury, meaty side; the Grenache is higher-toned, with red fruit, spice and floral lift. 2022 was a warm vintage, and the SQN reds from it are ripe and generous.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Syrah: blackberry, smoked meat, violet and black pepper. Grenache: kirsch, strawberry, rose petal and warm spice.
- Palate: Rich and full-bodied, the Syrah dense and structured, the Grenache silky and expansive.
- Finish: Long, with savoury dark fruit from the Syrah and red-fruited spice from the Grenache.
Serving & Food
Stand the magnums upright for a day, then decant each for two hours and pour at 17°C. The large format should keep them improving well into the 2040s. Suits a crowd: whole roast lamb, suckling pig, or a spread of grilled meats.

About the Winery
Sine Qua Non's winery sits in Oak View, just inland from Ventura, where a new facility was finished in 2012. Before that the wines were made in a warehouse at the back of an industrial estate in north Ventura, which Robert Parker once likened to a Mad Max film set.
The Oak View property is also home to the Cumulus vineyard. It is a short drive from Eleven Confessions in Santa Barbara County, and the fruit comes back to Oak View for winemaking.
