Cask #1157 was filled on 2 July 1974 and held in bond at Springbank under the distillery's private-bottling arrangement, where a buyer owned a numbered cask left to mature in the distillery's warehouses. After more than 28 years in a bourbon cask it was bottled on 25 February 2003 at 46%, uncoloured and not chill filtered, yielding 630 bottles.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Tropical fruit, pale honey and vanilla, with brine and a light wisp of peat.
- Palate: Medium-bodied and gently waxy, with mango, citrus, malt and a salty, mineral thread.
- Finish: Long and elegant, with soft smoke, oak and lingering fruit.
Serving & Food
Serve unchilled in a small tulip glass and leave the water jug aside; at 46% it is ready as it is. Good pairings are hand-dived scallops, a light Thai green papaya salad, or simple buttery shortbread.

About the Distillery
The early 1970s were a turning point at Springbank. Regular production picked up again from 1973 as demand for Scotch grew, and that same year the distillery ran its first heavily peated spirit, the start of what became Longrow. Springbank of that decade was lightly peated and distilled two and a half times, as it is today, though the floor maltings that now supply all of its barley only reopened in 1992. Stock laid down in the mid-1970s went on to supply many of the older bottlings released around the turn of the century.
