About This Whisky
Yoichi is one of two malt whisky distilleries owned by Nikka Whisky Distilling, founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru after he trained at the University of Glasgow and the Hazelburn distillery in Campbeltown. He chose Yoichi on Hokkaidō's west coast for a climate and coastal setting close to what he had studied in Scotland, and the distillery still uses direct coal-fired pot still heating, a traditional method most other producers have since replaced. The 15 Year release draws on spirit matured in casks laid down at the distillery over fifteen years.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Coastal peat smoke, salted malt, dried fruit and a note of polished oak.
- Palate: Full and warming, with malt sweetness, gentle peat, dried fruit and old oak.
- Finish: Long, with smoke, malt and a clean oak tail.
Serving & Food
Serve neat in a small tulip glass; a drop of water opens the peat if needed. Smoked salmon, grilled lamb or a piece of dark chocolate work well alongside.

About the Distillery
Nikka Whisky Distilling was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, who established the Yoichi distillery on Hokkaidō's west coast after studying Scotch production in Glasgow and Campbeltown.
