Krug 2013 is a fresh, citrus-driven Vintage from a cool, rainy year with a late, autumnal harvest. The Tasting Committee named it Exalted Citrus.

About This Champagne

Chardonnay defines Krug 2013. The cool, rainy season and autumnal harvest gave Chardonnay with a medley of citrus notes, and plots of Pinot Noir and Meunier were then chosen to amplify and reveal that purity. The blend is 41% Pinot Noir, 38% Chardonnay and 21% Meunier, and like every Krug Vintage it rested for more than ten years in the cellars. Julie Cavil sums it up as fragrant citrus on a silver platter.

Tasting Profile

• Nose: Lemon, bitter orange and candied citrus, with toasted almond and honey.
• Palate: Direct and precise, with blood orange, grapefruit and tangerine over a broad, creamy texture.
• Finish: Long and tangy, with a saline, mineral close.

Serving & Food

Serve at 9 to 10°C in a tulip glass; its citrus energy suits the cooler end of Krug's range. Open now for its vivacity or cellar for ten years and more. Krug suggests sea bass ceviche with ginger and lemongrass or creamy pasta with sea urchin, and fresh goat's cheese with candied citrus works too.

About the Maison

Krug owns only about 20 hectares of vines, so most of its fruit comes from long-standing partner growers across Champagne, some of whose plots the house first selected around 150 years ago. The winemaking team visits them throughout the year and works closely with them in the vineyard.

Krug has also invited growers to taste the wines made from their own plots. On one occasion a grower tasted wines from three neighbouring plots of the same variety and found three quite different wines, which is the plot-by-plot thinking behind every Krug blend in a nutshell.
