Freiherr zu Knyphausen is one of the longest-established estates in the Rheingau, based at Schloss Erbach near Eltville and farmed by the Knyphausen family since the early eighteenth century, with the cellars occupying former Cistercian monastic buildings connected to Kloster Eberbach. The estate's holdings centre on Erbacher Steinmorgen, a warm, gently sloping site on stony soils just inland from the Rhine, which gives Riesling with firm acidity and a clear mineral edge. Farming follows traditional Rheingau practice, with hand-harvesting and an emphasis on site character rather than yield. Alongside Riesling the estate has long worked with Ehrenfelser, a German crossing of Riesling and Silvaner developed in the 1920s that ripens readily and is well suited to late-harvest styles. This 1990 bottling comes from the Steinmorgen vineyard in the 500mL format.
