Four Roses Distillery, in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, runs an unusually broad production programme built on two mash bills and five proprietary yeast strains that yield ten distinct bourbon recipes. The Small Batch Limited Edition is an annual autumn release drawn from four or five of these recipes, blended and bottled uncut and unfiltered, typically allocated in small hand-numbered outturns. The 2016 edition was released during the early Brent Elliott era, after his appointment as master distiller in 2015 and before the wider line of small-batch limited editions became an established collector programme.
