Buffalo Trace Distillery stands on the Kentucky River at Frankfort, on a site where distilling is recorded from 1775. The Sazerac Company bought it in 1992, and the plant was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2013. Elmer Tandy Lee (1919-2013) joined as a maintenance engineer in 1949, rose to master distiller, and is widely credited with launching Blanton's in 1984, the first bourbon sold as a single-barrel expression. The distillery named a single-barrel bourbon in his honour after his retirement, and for years Lee personally selected the barrels that went into it. It is drawn from Buffalo Trace's Mash Bill #2, the higher-rye of the distillery's two bourbon recipes, and bottled at 90 US proof. This 2016 bottling is one of the regular 90-proof releases that built the brand's following.
