This is a magnum of Grands Échezeaux 2010 from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, the largest owner of this Grand Cru. 2010 is widely rated as a top red Burgundy vintage of its decade, and the bigger bottle means slow, even ageing.
About This Wine
DRC farms 3.53 hectares of Grands Échezeaux, more than a third of the vineyard, which lies in Flagey-Échezeaux on gently sloping ground just south-west of Clos de Vougeot. It tends to give a broader, darker-fruited wine than the domaine's Échezeaux, with an earthy, forest-floor side. The domaine's own records show 10,834 bottles harvested in 2010. The vintage delivered concentration with fine acidity, and reviewers at the time praised this wine's violet and black cherry aromatics and firm but harmonious build.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Violet, rose, black cherry and plum, with spice and a woodland note.
- Palate: Medium-plus in weight, dense and firmly structured, yet silky and balanced.
- Finish: Very long, with dark fruit, earth and lingering spice.
Serving & Food
At fifteen years old in magnum it is only now entering its drinking window and should keep developing for a decade or more. Stand the bottle for a day, decant gently off any sediment about an hour ahead, and serve at 16 to 17°C in large Burgundy stems. Roast grouse, duck with morels or beef fillet with truffle jus would suit it.

About the Domaine
The domaine as it stands took shape after 1869, when Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet bought Romanée-Conti and gathered holdings in Richebourg, La Tâche and both Échezeaux crus. In 1942 his descendants, the de Villaine family, formed a société civile with the Burgundy merchant Henri Leroy, and the two families still own it in equal halves. Aubert de Villaine led the domaine from 1974 until he stepped back at the start of 2022; today his nephew Bertrand de Villaine and Perrine Fenal, daughter of Lalou Bize-Leroy, share the direction. The vines have been farmed organically since 1985 and biodynamically since 2007. Alongside its two monopoles, Romanée-Conti and La Tâche, DRC holds large parts of Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Grands Échezeaux and Échezeaux.
