Don Julio 1942 is the house's small-batch añejo, named for the year Don Julio González began making tequila. The Luminous Edition puts the same tequila in a limited bottle with an illuminated label, made for display.
About This Tequila
1942 was created to mark sixty years since the founder began distilling. It is made from 100% Blue Weber agave, produced in small batches and aged for more than two years in American white oak casks that previously held bourbon, then bottled at 40%. The Luminous Edition changes only the presentation: the label is lit, so the bottle shows up in a dim bar or on a dinner table. The tequila inside is standard 1942.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Rich caramel and chocolate, with roasted agave underneath.
- Palate: Warm oak, vanilla and roasted agave, rounded and soft.
- Finish: Lingering oak and rich vanilla.
Serving & Food
Pour neat into a tulip or snifter at room temperature, or over one large ice cube if you prefer it cooler. Don Julio recommends it for sipping rather than mixing. Slow-cooked beef cheek tacos, churros with dark chocolate or flan all work alongside it.

About the Distillery
Don Julio González-Frausto Estrada was born in 1925 in Atotonilco El Alto, in the highlands of Jalisco, and learned the trade at his uncle's distillery. In 1942, aged 17, he started his own operation, which became the La Primavera distillery.
He spent the next four decades refining his tequila, first under the Tres Magueyes brand and later under his own name. Don Julio González died in 2012. The brand is now owned by Diageo and still produced in Atotonilco El Alto.
