Dalwhinnie distillery sits at 1,073 feet (327 m) in the Central Highlands of Scotland, making it one of the highest working distilleries in the country. Built in 1897 by the Caledonian Railway Company as the second of its northern distilleries, the site takes its water from Loch Ericht-side streams and matures spirit in the cold, dry air that defines the Dalwhinnie house style. Owned by Diageo since 1925 (with a brief interlude under the original founders), Dalwhinnie is now part of Diageo's Classic Malts of Scotland selection alongside Oban, Glenkinchie and Cragganmore. The 15 Year Old has been the distillery's flagship expression since its launch in 1989 and is built around a high proportion of refill American oak maturation to keep the honeyed malt character to the front.
