Louis Roederer is one of the great independent Champagne houses, founded in 1776 and still family-owned under the Roederer family. Cristal was first created in 1876 for Tsar Alexander II of Russia and remains the house's prestige cuvée, produced only from estate-owned grand cru vineyards and aged in stainless steel before extended bottle ageing on the second lees. The 2008 vintage was a cool, late-ripening year in Champagne, producing wines of bright acidity, fine chalky structure and notable ageing potential — Cristal 2008 is widely regarded as one of the longer-lived Cristal vintages of its decade, with a tightly-wound, mineral profile that rewards cellaring.
