Cristal is the prestige cuvée of Louis Roederer, a family-owned Champagne house founded in 1776 in Reims and renamed by Louis Roederer in 1833; the firm today remains in the Rouzaud family ownership (Wikipedia, 'Louis Roederer'). The cuvée was first created in 1876 for Tsar Alexander II, originally in clear crystal bottles with a flat punt, and was made commercially available from 1945 (Wikipedia, 'Cristal (wine)'). The 1990 vintage bottled in a 6-litre Methuselah as a Millennium Edition in its original wooden case represents one of the large-format releases of this flagship prestige cuvée.
