Chichibu Distillery began production in 2008 in a small, purpose-built facility in Saitama Prefecture, north-west of Tokyo. It is the work of Ichiro Akuto — inheritor of the family-run Hanyu distillery, which closed in 2000 — and continues that lineage through a similarly small, cask-led operation. Chichibu runs a single wash and spirit still (plus a separate set used for experiments), floor maltings of its own barley, slow fermentations and very small cask fills. Cask programme ranges across bourbon, sherry, wine and Japanese oak — and almost every official release is a single cask or very small batch, bottled at cask strength without colouring or chill-filtration. The LMDW "Artist" series is La Maison du Whisky's long-running anniversary programme of single-cask bottlings from selected partner distilleries; this cask is the Chichibu contribution to the line's tenth anniversary.
