Chichibu Distillery was founded in 2008 by Ichiro Akuto, the grandson of Toa Shuzo founder Isouji Akuto and the man who previously acquired and bottled the legendary Hanyu "Card Series" casks. Located in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture, just outside Tokyo, Chichibu was the first new licensed malt distillery to open in Japan in decades and was deliberately built small — short fermentation, compact stills, slow distillation and a heavy reliance on cask variety — to produce whisky in a more European craft style. Partner bars and whisky communities are allocated individual casks by Ichiro's Malt for anniversary and house bottlings, and these releases — usually presented at cask strength, without colouring or chill-filtration, and clearly named after the partner — have become an established part of the Chichibu collecting market. Milwaukee's Club is one of Japan's most respected whisky bar networks, with a long history of championing Japanese craft whisky. Cask #1568 is a 2006 distillate, putting it among the earlier Chichibu fill casks to reach bottling age.
