Château Cheval Blanc's vineyard sits on the western edge of the Saint-Émilion plateau, on a strip of gravel, sand and the unusual deep blue clay that underpins the estate's freshness and aromatic lift. The grand vin remains a near-equal blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, unusual among Saint-Émilion's great estates and the reason Cheval Blanc is often described as Merlot with Cab Franc perfume and Cabernet structure in one bottle. The estate has been owned since 1998 by Bernard Arnault and Baron François Pinault, whose investment programmes included the new gravity-flow chai designed by Christian de Portzamparc and a substantial replanting drive. 2020 was declared after a warm growing season with even ripening, producing a Cheval Blanc of ripe fruit, supple tannin and accessible structure — an expressive window into a vintage likely to age very well.
