Château Cheval Blanc 1984 1.5L is a magnum-format bottling from the Right-Bank estate of Château Cheval Blanc, a Premier Grand Cru Classé A in Saint-Émilion and one of the most storied Bordeaux wines of the post-war era. The 1984 vintage is one of the older, mature expressions still available from this estate and, in magnum, is particularly prized for cellaring longevity and ceremonial service.
From the Producer
Château Cheval Blanc sits on the western edge of the Saint-Émilion appellation, where the gravelly, sandy soils of Pomerol meet the clay-limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion. The estate's modern reputation was built in the 19th century and consolidated in the 20th; it was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé "A" status when the Saint-Émilion classification was introduced in 1955 and has held it at every revision since. Cheval Blanc is unusual among the great Bordeaux estates for being planted almost entirely to Cabernet Franc and Merlot in roughly equal parts, with very little Cabernet Sauvignon, giving the wine its signature perfumed, lifted Cabernet Franc character layered over Merlot flesh. The estate was acquired in 1998 by LVMH (owner of Moët Hennessy) and Bernard Arnault's Groupe Arnault, ending its long run as a family-owned property. The 1984 vintage sits in the more classically framed, less opulent tier of modern Cheval Blanc vintages, more about finesse and tertiary development than the blockbuster concentration of younger recent years. Magnum format (1.5L) is widely regarded as the optimal bottle size for long cellaring because of the lower oxygen-to-wine ratio.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Mature Cabernet Franc perfume — dried flowers, tobacco, forest floor and dark berry.
- Palate: Soft and integrated, with savoury fruit, fine-grained tannin and the cool, lifted character of mature Right-Bank Merlot-Cabernet Franc blends.
- Finish: Long and gentle, with tertiary complexity and a clean, mineral Saint-Émilion close.
Best For
Fine-wine collectors, restaurant cellars, and gifting on commemorative occasions. Pairs naturally with red-meat dishes, aged cheeses or contemplative cellaring.
