Château Lafite Rothschild sits at the western edge of the Pauillac appellation on Bordeaux's Left Bank, with vineyard holdings on the gravelly Carruades plateau that rises just to the west of the château. The estate's modern history began in 1868 when Baron James de Rothschild acquired the property through public auction; the same family, through Domaine Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), still owns and operates the château today. Carruades de Lafite was introduced in 1841 as the estate's second wine and is named after the Carruades plateau itself. The wine is produced from younger vines and from plots adjacent to the grand-vin vineyard, using the same Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend as the flagship and aged in French oak barrels made at the château's cooperage. The 2001 vintage on Bordeaux's Left Bank produced classical, structured wines with firm tannin; the original wooden case supplied by the château for the 2001 release is a 12-bottle OWC and is offered here as an empty presentation and storage case without bottles.
