From the Producer

Caroni was the state-owned sugar factory and rum distillery in central Trinidad, running its own column stills alongside sugar production for most of the 20th century and producing a heavy, high-ester molasses rum. The complex was closed by the Trinidad and Tobago government in 2002 and the maturing casks were left untouched for several years before being acquired by Italian independent bottler Velier working with Caribbean partner LCU. Subsequent independent bottlers and rum specialists — including the Velier-controlled Heavy Trinidad line — have helped define the cult reputation of Caroni's "heavy" profile, which is essentially the distillery at its most concentrated, with strong tar, dark caramel, rubber and burnt-sugar character. The 1994 vintage sits in the older band of remaining stock and gives more developed oak integration than the brighter 1998s while preserving the muscular Trinidad profile collectors expect. The Heavy Trinidad releases are presented at natural strength, without colouring or chill-filtration, in line with Velier's house style for Caroni.
