Cardhu Distillery sits on the slopes above the village of Knockando in Speyside, on the east bank of the Spey River. The distillery was founded in 1824 by John Cumming and his wife Helen Cumming, who had been running illicit distillation on the farm for years before licensing; the current Cardhu site developed from a rebuilt 1825 layout. Cardhu was acquired by Johnnie Walker owner DCL (later Diageo) in 1893 and has been a key Speyside contributor to blended Scotch, with Johnnie Walker carrying a significant Cardhu component for more than a century. Diageo's Special Releases are an annual limited-edition series of single malts issued across multiple distilleries; the 2021 edition continued the "Legends Untold" experimental-cask theme and paired Cardhu 14 Year Old with cask-finishing ideas designed to extend the distillery's house malt-fruit profile. The 14-year-old age statement places the maturation in refill American-oak ex-bourbon casks, with an additional cask finish applied at the close of maturation.
