Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Asili Riserva 2004 in magnum is a mature Piedmont Nebbiolo from the celebrated Asili cru, bottled in 1.5L format for slower development and more dramatic table presentation. The Riserva designation and large format make it a serious cellar bottle for collectors focused on classic Barbaresco.
From the Producer
Bruno Giacosa, the third-generation "Genius of Neive", joined the family wine business at 15 and built a reputation as one of the three producers — alongside Gaja and Produttori del Barbaresco — who proved what Barbaresco could be. Decanter counts the estate among Italy's First Growths. The house today farms about 20 hectares, including holdings in Asili and Rabajà in the Barbaresco zone, and its oenological approach has been called "updated traditional": long skin maceration of up to thirty days, with ageing in large botti of French rather than Slavonian oak. A Riserva — marked by the estate's red label — is bottled only in vintages judged exceptional; in weaker years Giacosa declassifies or declines to bottle at all, as the estate did with its top 2010 reds. Dante Scaglione, oenologist from 1990 to 2006, was in place for the 2004 vintage.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Rose, red cherry, dried herb, tar, anise and autumnal spice.
- Palate: Structured yet elegant, with savoury red fruit, firm Nebbiolo tannins, tobacco and mineral lift.
- Finish: Long and classical, with rose petal, earth and lingering balsamic complexity.
Best For
Mature Italian-wine collectors, Piedmont-focused cellars, truffle-season menus and magnum service where developed Nebbiolo is the point of the bottle.
