Booker's Rye 2016, known as the Big Time Batch, is a barrel-proof Kentucky straight rye aged 13 years, 1 month and 12 days and bottled at 68.1% ABV. It was the first rye ever released under the Booker's name and was named American Whiskey of the Year by Whisky Advocate in 2016.
About This Whisky
The rye was barrelled in 2003, among the last whiskey Booker Noe laid down before he died in 2004. Fred Noe selected the barrels from one of his father's favourite rackhouses and bottled them in 2016, uncut and unfiltered, at 136.2 proof. It was a one-time release in 750mL and has become a much-sought-after modern American rye. Its category is straight rye whiskey rather than bourbon.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Dark caramel, rye bread, mint and cocoa, with vanilla, dried fruit and old oak.
- Palate: Powerful and layered, with baking spice, brown sugar, herbal rye notes and heavy oak.
- Finish: Very long and warming, with clove, dark chocolate and drying wood.
Serving & Food
Nose it well before sipping; at 68.1% it needs patience. A spoonful of cool water brings out dried fruit and mint. Pastrami on rye, smoked duck or a dark chocolate and cherry dessert.

About the Distillery
Booker's is named for Frederick Booker Noe II, grandson of Jim Beam and master distiller at the Beam distillery in Clermont, Kentucky, for more than 40 years. He first bottled uncut, unfiltered bourbon straight from the barrel as holiday gifts for friends, and in 1988 it went on sale as Booker's. Every batch is bottled at its natural barrel proof, so the strength and age change from release to release and are printed on the label. Today his son Fred Noe and grandson Freddie Noe carry on the line at the James B. Beam Distilling Co.
