The Balvenie distillery was founded by William Grant in Dufftown in 1892-93 and remains one of only a handful of Scottish distilleries to keep its own floor malting, coppersmith and cooperage on site. Former Malt Master David Stewart, who joined William Grant & Sons in 1962, pioneered the wood-finishing technique used across Balvenie's range — maturing whisky in one cask type, such as ex-bourbon, then transferring it into a second cask, such as ex-rum, to add depth and complexity.
